A surge in the number of suicides and suicide attempts in the wake of an economic crisis has shocked and gripped Spain. Just today, a 50-year-old man became the latest person that committed suicide the same day a foreclosure order for his home was to be served.

According to Basque Government sources, the 50-year-old man, whose identity was not revealed, hurled himself out of the window of his house in the fourth floor of the building in the Basque town of Bilbao, just  moments before a foreclosure order for his home was to be served.

Marta Uriarte, spokeswoman in Bizkaia for the platform of people evicted Stop Desahucios,  explained that court officials arrived the victims house in order to serve the foreclosure order and knocked on the door several times. Once they entered the house helped by a locksmith, they found next to an open window the chair the man had used to hurl himself out of the window.

Suicide rates have increased across Spain as the nation continues to feel the strain from government austerity measures and crippling unemployment.

Several platforms of people evicted are asking courts to consider what they call a "social rent" for people unable to pay their mortgages instead of evicting them from their homes.
