Raul Gonzalez kicks off anti-hunger campaign
Many of Europe's top football clubs will raise awareness of the plight in west Africa's Sahel region, where 10 million people need help.
Former Spain striker Raul Gonzalez has kicked off an anti-hunger campaign during which many of Europe's top football clubs will raise awareness of the plight in west Africa's Sahel region, where 10 million people need help.
From Manchester United to Barcelona, Real Madrid to AC Milan and Schalke, players from top clubs will wear "Sahel Emergency" T-shirts ahead of their matches of the March 31 weekend to alert millions of fans in stadiums and on television about the life-threatening situation in Africa.
European Union Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva says the awareness effort by the professional players alone causes a spike in contributions to non-governmental organizations working to alleviate hunger.
