A Seville milliner has vowed to "fight to the end" after being told by the Spanish Patent Office that calling her shop 'Arsenale' was an infringement of trademark. Lawyers representing London football club Arsenal had been petitioning authorities in Spain ever since Simon registered her shop's name back in 2007.
Simon took the title of her shop from a medieval Italian name for shipyards located in Pisa and Venice, a reference to the Arenal de Sevilla district where her shop is located.
A far cry from the north London club, whose name comes from the armaments factory where the first team players worked over 100 years ago.
However, Arsenal successfully convinced the Spanish Patency and Trademark Office that the existence of a hat shop in Seville with the name 'Arsenale' could be the cause of confusion. Apparently, the main cause of the infringement is the fact that Simon also sells clothes and shoes .
So far, Alicia Simon has not changed the name of her shop and says she will not back down, despite facing a potential David versus Goliath situation. She has decided to appeal the decision, and awaits a further ruling by a court in Madrid.
