The Basque city of Getaria, a seaside city in the north of the Basque Country just a 25-minute drive from Donostia-San Sebastian, was chosen among New York Times' 46 places to go in 2013 when the NY newspaper announced its list of the new places to explore.
"This fishing village was all about a quiet maritime life, with boats bobbing in the small port, and seaside restaurants grilling excellent fish", Sarah Wildman says of Getaria, from where she mentions as the most famous local son Juan Sebastián Elcano, who sailed with Magellan and was the first to circumnavigate the globe in the early 16th century.
The travel writer does not forget to mention fashion icon Cristobal Balenciaga, also from Getaria, whose Cristobal Balenciaga Museum has recently opened "drawing a sophisticated design set to Getaria’s twisting medieval central streets, and filling its restaurants and hotels with travelers from Paris, Madrid and beyond".
Other top destinations mentioned in the article include completely different places such as Houston, Istanbul, Rio de Janeiro, Oslo, Mongolia, Nicaragua or Bangkok.
