Following the election results registered in the Basque Autonomous Community on Sunday evening, in which the nationalists gained a significant majority, the PNV and Amaiur have wasted no time in demanding from incumbent lehendakari Patxi López that he bring forward the autonomical elections, scheduled for 2013.

Both nationalist groups insist that, given the outcome of Sunday’s ballot, the current Basque Parliament no longer represent the wider Basque community.

"The Basque Parliament in Vitoria-Gasteiz is now clearly far from representative of the sociopolitical situation of this country," Amaiur’s principle candidate Iñaki Antigüedad said on Sunday, adding that a "call to election" should be made as soon as possible in order that to create a parliament that represents all "political pursuasions".

The next autonomical elections are scheduled to take place in Spring 2013, though the PNV have been requesting they be brought forward since before Sunday’s general elections.

The spokesman for the PSE-EE, José Antonio Pastor, confirmed on Monday that the Basque President, Patxi López, would see out his legislature until the end and has no plans to lead the PSOE (the Socialist party in Spain).

Pastor confirmed, in an interview with ETB, that it was Patxi López’s responsibility to see out his mandate in the Basque Country and convene autonomical elections "when the time comes; that is, in March 2013 and not before."

Concluding results in the Basque Parliament

The conclusion of the 20 November Spanish election results have left the way a political map never before seen in the Basque Parliament, with the PNV and Amaiur drawing even on 20 seats each in the Basque Country. Applying the D’Hont Law to the ballot cast at Sunday’s vote, the Socialists, on 18 seats (seven less than in 2009) would be pushed into third position, the PP would win 15 seats (two more than in the previous autonomical elections) while Ezker Batua would have two seats.
