This Saturday 15th October, the Director General of Euskal Irrati Telebista (EITB), Alberto Surio, was in New York's Euskal Etxea to present EITB's Canal Vasco (Basque TV channel) for America, which for the past few months has been available across the United States via the Galaxy 23 satellite. The act was attended by Basque President Patxi López and a broad cross-section of the Basque community.

The Director General of EITB described the extension of the group's Basque Channel to America as an important milestone. The international channel signal already enjoys wide coverage in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Colombia, and via the Galaxy 23 satellite its transmission will be majorly increased across North America.

"This is an important step towards, on the one hand, becoming a window through which the world can reflect upon Euskadi and our sociocultural reality, and on the other, strengthening ties with the substantial Basque community living in America," said Alberto Surio.

The programs offered by Canal Vasco are of a generalist nature for anyone interested in learning more about life in the Basque Country, as well as those for whom it serves as a way of getting closer to Europe. Canal Vasco works both ways: To bring the Basque Country to America and America closer to the Basque Country. The scheduling of Canal Vasco is based on three central themes: current affairs; sports, particularly Basque ball (pelota) and rowing; and finally culture and entertainment, comprising EITB’s most popular programs in the Basque Country.

Presentation of eitb.com and EITB on demand

In addition to presenting EITB's international channel, Patxi Arratibel, EITB's Director of Strategy and External Relations, was in New York to present the eitb.com website and the EITB on Demand service, "online platforms which allow us to disseminate and bring people closer to the Basque language, culture and the image of our reality to the world," he explained.

The eitb.com website, which also offers users the chance to watch Canal Vasco on-line, was recently updated and is strongly committed to the multimedia and multiplatform nature of the EITB group, with a particular focus on radio and television content in the fields of entertainment and current affairs. The design, image and contents of the website have been completely updated, in order to offer a best browsing experience based on leadership in the audiovisual field.

The project, which has now become a reality, includes the provision of accessibility via portable appliances, with a version created specifically for cellphones, and applications for iPhone and Android. Likewise, the new EITB on Demand service brings together all of the contents of Euskal Irrati Telebista, regardless of geographical boundaries, to be accessed from any location, at any time and via the technological appliance of your choosing.
