Either everything that could go wrong in Fukushima did go wrong, or the official information released so far has not been correct.
The Japanese are remaining calm and still trust their government. However, outside Japan there are more and more doubts about whether the information released by the Japanese government is correct.
A couple of days ago, experts at nuclear plants said that the measures taken in Fukushima were correct, that the reactors were cooling down and that, in a few days, the situation would improve. However, all of them now say that there will be significant radiation leaks. So, either everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, or the official information released so far has not been correct.
The government could have released incorrect information on purpose in order not to cause more panic or simply because it did not have the necessary data, but the myth of Japanese efficiency is falling apart.
In fact, the myth had already been proved wrong. For example, the massive mercury pollution of the Minamata Bay which went on for thirty years, or the accidents at the Tokaimura nuclear plant in 1999, and Kashiwazaki, in 2007, where information was covered up.
It is true that there was no human error involved in the Fukushima tragedy and that it was an extraordinary natural disaster which triggered the catastrophe. But, the consequences for Japan and for the other affected countries is the same.
We are facing a second nuclear accident after Chernobyl and, if predictions come true, it will become the most tragic.
